Foça

Foça is one of the most charming coastal towns on the northern Aegean, known for its historic harbour, stone houses, fishing boats and relaxed seaside atmosphere. Built around the ancient city of Phocaea, the town combines archaeological heritage with traditional Aegean life. The Old Foça Waterfront is the heart of the town. Lined with cafés, seafood restaurants and small boats, it offers peaceful views across the harbour and surrounding coastline. Walking along the waterfront is one of the best ways to experience Foça’s maritime character and local atmosphere. Foça Castle and the surviving sections of the city walls reflect the town’s long strategic importance. Fortifications existed here from antiquity and were strengthened during later Byzantine, Genoese and Ottoman periods. Their position around the harbour helped protect the settlement and control access from the sea. One of the most distinctive parts of the defensive system is the Five Gates Castle, known locally as Beşkapılar. Located close to the waterfront, its arched openings and stone walls once formed part of the fortified entrance to the town. Today, it remains an important historical landmark and is sometimes used as a setting for cultural events. Off the coast are the Siren Rocks, a group of rocky islets traditionally associated with the Sirens of Greek mythology. According to ancient stories, the Sirens enchanted sailors with their voices and lured ships towards dangerous rocks. These formations add a legendary character to Foça’s already dramatic coastal landscape. The surrounding sea is also closely connected with the Mediterranean monk seal, one of the rarest marine mammals in the world. Foça’s rocky coastline and secluded caves have long provided important habitat for this endangered species, contributing to the area’s natural significance. Together, the Old Foça Waterfront, Foça Castle and City Walls, Five Gates Castle and Siren Rocks reveal the historical, maritime and mythological character of Foça.
