Çandarlı

Çandarlı is a peaceful coastal town in the Dikili district, known for its historic castle, relaxed waterfront and connection with the ancient settlement of Pitane. Located on the northern Aegean coast, the town combines seaside life, archaeological heritage and traditional local character. The most prominent landmark is Çandarlı Castle, which rises beside the harbour and dominates the town’s coastline. The fortress was strengthened during the Ottoman period and is closely associated with Çandarlı Halil Pasha, one of the most important statesmen of the early Ottoman Empire. Its stone walls, towers and elevated position reflect the strategic importance of the settlement along the Aegean coast. The Çandarlı Waterfront forms the social heart of the town. Its promenade, small harbour, beaches, cafés and seafood restaurants create a relaxed atmosphere throughout the day. Çandarlı also stands close to the site of the ancient city of Pitane, an Aeolian settlement with roots reaching back to antiquity. Archaeological discoveries from the area show that Pitane was connected with regional trade and cultural exchange along the northern Aegean coast. Finds from the ancient settlement have included pottery, terracotta objects and other remains that provide insight into daily life in the region. Although much of ancient Pitane lies beneath or around the modern settlement and is not presented as a large archaeological park, its history adds an important ancient layer to the identity of Çandarlı. Together, Çandarlı Castle, the waterfront and the heritage of ancient Pitane reveal the historical and coastal character of the town.
