Urla

Urla is one of the most attractive destinations on the İzmir Peninsula, combining ancient history, archaeological heritage, vineyards, olive groves and a relaxed Aegean atmosphere. Located west of İzmir, the area has been inhabited for thousands of years and preserves important traces of both prehistoric settlements and ancient Ionian civilisation. One of Urla’s most significant archaeological sites is the Ancient City of Klazomenai. Founded by Ionian Greeks, Klazomenai became an important coastal settlement and trading centre in the ancient Aegean world. The city was especially known for olive oil production, ceramics and maritime trade. Among the most remarkable discoveries at Klazomenai is an ancient olive oil workshop dating back to the 6th century BC. Archaeological remains reveal an advanced production system using stone presses and storage areas, providing valuable insight into the importance of olive cultivation and olive oil in ancient Anatolia. Nearby, the Limantepe Archaeological Site reveals an even earlier chapter of Urla’s history. Excavations have uncovered settlement layers reaching back thousands of years, including prehistoric houses, defensive structures and evidence of maritime activity. Limantepe’s location beside the coast made it an important centre for communities connected with Aegean trade routes. Another distinctive historical site is Quarantine Island, known in Turkish as Karantina Adası. Connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway, the island became an important quarantine station during the Ottoman period. Travellers and ships arriving from abroad were inspected and, when necessary, isolated here to help prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The surviving buildings and facilities on Quarantine Island reflect the development of organised public health practices during the 19th century. Its location beside the sea also creates a striking combination of historical architecture and Aegean coastal scenery. Together, Klazomenai Ancient City, Limantepe Archaeological Site and Quarantine Island reveal different layers of Urla’s long history—from prehistoric settlements and ancient Ionian trade to Ottoman public health.
